The N44 Complex
Credit &Copyright:Don Goldman,Macedon Ranges Observatory

Explanation:A truly giant complex ofemission nebulae, N44 is about 1,000 light-years across. It shines in southern skies as a denizen of our neighboring galaxy, theLarge Magellanic Cloud, 170,000 light-years away.Winds and intense radiation from hot, young, luminous stars in N44 excite and sculpt filaments and streamers of theglowing nebular gas. Butsupernovae - the death explosions of the massive short lived stars - have also likely contributed to the region's enormous, blown-out shapes. The cluster of young stars seen near the center lies ina superbubble nearly 250 light-years across. Thisdetailed, false-color view of the intricate structures codes emission from hydrogen, oxygen, and sulfur in shades of blue and green.

Entry for March 19, 2008/Poetry Wednesday

I posted this poem as one of my very first entries to Poetry Wednesday . It was also my first Spring with Yahoo 360. So I thought I would relive that moment and celebrate the vernal equinox coming tomorrow with this wonderful poem. It has always been one of my favorites since childhood and I never tire of it. I hope you don't either.

Enjoy

Susan

"I WANDERED LONELY AS A CLOUD"

I WANDERED lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
          A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.
Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the milky way,
    They stretched in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay:
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.
The waves beside them danced; but they
Out-did the sparkling waves in glee:
A poet could not but be gay,
     In such a jocund company:
   I gazed--and gazed--but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought:
For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
         Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils. 1804.

IT'S SNOWING

For most of you this is probably not such a big deal but in Central Arizona where I live it is a big wonderful deal because it doesn't happen often, may not last long either. Perfect for the almost end of March. The Universe just saying it isn't Spring yet.

Happy Sunday

Entry for March 07, 2008/ Poison Proof Your Home

I know you have seen me post things like this before. I always think, never enough.

DO YOU KNOW HOW TO POISON-PROOF YOUR HOME?
chocolateReady to do a littlehomework, pet parents? National Poison Prevention Week is almost here─March 16 to March 22─and because our pets depend on us to keep them safe, we think it’s the perfect time to review the harmful substances your furry explorers may encounter at home. Here are just a few ways to ensure that your household is pet poison-proof:

  • Keep prescription and over-the-counter drugs such as painkillers, cold and flu preparations and antidepressants behind tightly closed cabinet doors.
  • Make sure chocolate, coffee andother potentially dangerous foods are kept out of pets' reach.
  • When using products to eliminate fleas, ticks and other pests, follow directions exactly. Be sure the item you’re using has been formulated specifically for your pet, and check with your veterinarian before using it.
  • Many common household plants such as lilies, azaleas and kalanchoe can cause surprisingly severe, even life-threatening effects in pets. Please check our complete lists oftoxic andnontoxic plants.
  • Take care to use cleaning products that have been proven safe for use around pets. If you do use bleaches, detergents or disinfectants, keep your pets away from the cleaned areas until the product has dried thoroughly, and be sure to store the products in a secure place.

Visit the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (APCC) online for lists of specific items that could be dangerous to pets. And if you fear your pet has been poisoned, don’t panic. Call the APCC hotline at (888) 426-4435. Please note that a consultation fee for this service applies.

P.S.: Got questions about dangerous household items? Why not ask our ASPCA experts directly!? Join our live Ask the APCC chat on Thursday, March 20, from noon to 2:00 P.M. in theASPCA Online Community. Dana Farbman, CVT, Senior Manager, Professional Communications, and Dr. Eric Dunayer, Veterinary Toxicologist, will be ready to answer your toughest questions about pet poison control.

Happy Friday all and have a good weekend.
