PET POISON ALERT: LIQUID POTPOURRI PACKS A PAINFUL PUNCH
Want a fresh and fragrant home? Before setting out that delicious-smelling potpourri simmer pot, please take heed. Many liquid potpourris contain essential oils and detergents that could prove hazardous to your furry companions, based on an analysis of calls to the ASPCA’s Animal Poison Control Center.

According to the ASPCA’s Dr. Steven Hansen, veterinary toxicologist and senior vice president, the essential oils found in many of these products can cause irritation of the skin, gastrointestinal tract and mucous membranes. More significant injuries are typically a result of thermal burns or exposure to a specific type of detergent. Says Hansen, “A class of detergents known as cationics is usually responsible for severe ulceration of the membranes of the mouth, throat and gastrointestinal tract. Where there is contact with the skin, redness, swelling and extremely painful lesions can appear.” Symptoms of these exposures include drooling, vomiting, depression, metabolic disturbances and difficulty breathing from fluid on the lungs.

Although 10 percent of the liquid potpourri poisoning cases managed by the ASPCA since 2001 have included life-threatening effects, most animals make a full recovery if treated promptly. “However, it is important to note that treatment can be very extensive and may involve a lengthy hospitalization,” says Hansen.

And feline caretakers, please take note—cats are more likely to be at risk than dogs. “This is most likely because cats have greater access to the simmer pots, which are usually kept on countertops or other high-level surfaces,” explains Hansen. Most exposures occur when cats lap up heated liquid from the simmer pot, or when liquid spills on their fur from a leaky container.

To avoid exposing your pet to the dangers of liquid potpourri, ASPCA experts offer the following tips:
- Place potpourri simmer pots and unused liquid in rooms where pets cannot gain access.
- Consider using relatively safer alternatives, such as plug-in or solid air fresheners. (Do take care to use these in out-of-reach locations as well.)
- If you suspect your pet has been exposed to liquid potpourri, please call your veterinarian or the APCC's emergency hotline at (888) 426-4435 for round-the-clock telephone assistance.

The picture above is Jake dog, my boyfriend and Khay the Elder, ( he's 17)the broken kitty in our family. He has neck problems and doesn't walk to well. Obviously get along great with Jake.

Update on entry of the 28th. My next door neighbor, who is crazy about pit bulls, is now also on the case and swears she will find a home for Smokey(the poor doggies name). In the mean time I have talked to my friend and told her to hang in there. It seems her son really wants to keep the pup but his new wife is too prissy to live any where they might be able to keep him. But they have taken him off to play in the mountains today so he is having a good time. I will go over to her house tomorrow and help her train him to a Gentle Leader, a great training collar, face harness thingy, very gentle. See if we can't help with the barking issue. So keep good thoughts and I thanks you all that have left such wonderful comments regarding the Smokey's plight.

Soon is the new year and that always brings good things (as long as we have no tidel waves)

Christmas is over and the virus I had seems to have run it's course, so I am feeling pretty good and hope that I can finally start cruising everyone's blog. By the looks of it some of you have been busy during the holiday posting away. I on the other hand decided that I would give my shoulders and fingers a good rest while I was laid up.

I just got off the phone with a friend of mine who is trying to find a home for a poor dog that sort of belongs to her son. This kid adopted two dogs about three years ago when he was living with his mother(my friend) then moved out and basicly dumped them on her. She didn't have the gumption to tell him to take the dogs with him. In the mean time he has gotten engaged, had the dogs for a while, has to move found a home for one of them and because the other one is a pit bull can't find a home for him and has dumped him on his mother again who can't keep him because he barks too much. So the kid needs to be out of his place by the middle of January and no one wants the poor dog and my friend is saying(to me of all people) wouldn't it be kinder to put him down if she can't find him a responsible home. Well I jumped right down her throat screaming murder, literally. Told her she was enableing her irresponsible son by taking this burden on herself and he must find this dog a home. Everyone around here has a pit bull, but no one will let you rent with them.

My question is why people are so irresponsible with four legged animals. Especially young adults. Are they brought up wrong? Are most people in general just not caring when it comes to dogs and cats. Their lives mean nothing? Would they have their own children and be this responsible with them, maybe, who knows. Let my folks take the responsible, is that the attitude of most young people. Even my friend seems to have an irresponsible attitude and I know her to be a loving person.

Well I think the thing I can do that will help them most right now is put her in touch with Best Friends, Maybe they can help them find a home for this poor dog and maybe A Paw UP Rescue. On to the phone right now.

I will let you know the out come.

Starting the Trip Towards Christmas/Dec 20th

Since it is Poetry Wednesday I thought I would do a little Christams posting

THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS

'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house

Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;



The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,

In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there;



The children were nestled all snug in their beds,

While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads;

And mamma in her 'kerchief, and I in my cap,

Had just settled down for a long winter's nap,

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,

I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.

Away to the window I flew like a flash,

Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.

The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow

Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below,

When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,



But a miniature sleigh, and eight tiny reindeer,

With a little old driver, so lively and quick,

I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick.

More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,

And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name;

"Now, Dasher! now, Dancer! now, Prancer and Vixen!

On, Comet! on Cupid! on, Donder and Blitzen!

To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!

Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!"

As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,

When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky,

So up to the house-top the coursers they flew,

With the sleigh full of toys, and St. Nicholas too.



And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof

The prancing and pawing of each little hoof.

As I drew in my hand, and was turning around,

Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound.

He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,

And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot;

A bundle of toys he had flung on his back,

And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack.

His eyes -- how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!

His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!

His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,

And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow;

The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,

And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath;

He had a broad face and a little round belly,

That shook, when he laughed like a bowlful of jelly.

He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,

And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself;

A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,

Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread;

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,

And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk,

And laying his finger aside of his nose,

And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose;

He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,

And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.



But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight,

"Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night."

Starting the good wishes for the holidays

Happy Hannuka, a little late but it is still going on.

Solstice is coming fast, it is getting darker and darker every day. Soon comes the longets night of the year and hopefully the sun a little earlier every morning from the 22nd on. I have my candles all lite every night to ward off the darkness Just brought the mistletoe in to hang over my Solstice altar that I make with images of animals, bits for nature like pine cones and holly and of course lots of candles and the center piece is my little ceramic Christmas tree covered with froliking kittens.

Hopefully I will not lose this blog. We shall see. I have downloaded Adobe Flash 9 and cleaned out my cache. Guess I should pay more attention to my friends(?) at Yahoo 360.

WELL YET AGAIN ONE MORE TIME YAHOO TRIES TO IMPROVE ITSELF AND ALL IT DOES IS MAKES THINGS MORE DIFFICULT. I HAVE TRIED THREE TIMES NOW TO POST AND ENTRY TO SAY WHAT A GREAT TIME I HAD IN LAS VEGAS FOR MY BIRTHDAY AND THANKS TO ALL OF YOU FOR THE GOOD WISHES AND THREE TIMES NOW I HAVE LOST IT. WATCH OUT FOR THAT SPELL CHECK AND IT SEEMS YOU CAN'T RETRIEVE THE ORIGIONAL BLOG LIKE YOU USE TO BE ABLE TO. REMINDS ME OF THAT OLD SAYING "IF IT'S NOT BROKEN DON'T FIX IT".

Entry for December 08, 2006/Friends

Hi all, I haven't been to good about posting anything, I am running around trying to catch up with all my friends. Sometimes I think that having too many friends isn't a good thing. I really feel that I have to visit everyone every day and boy that is a real chore. Then I think friendship is really something that has to be worked at. You can't just expect them to be there all the time if you haven't been around also.

I have seen a few of my friends have alot of trouble with crazy people on Yahoo 360. I have noticed that when you try and go public they start rolling in like a tidel wave. To me it is stick to your friends, and friends of friends and we all hope we have good taste.

My blog is about making friends in wonderful places, but if you really want them to be friends you can only have so many and you have to be choosey. To stay in touch , as I have found out, is hard. You can only spread yourself so thin.

If  I haven't been around lately, sorry, I will be there I promise.

Art Sunday

For a little fine art this Sunday I have chosen on of my favorite American artistJames Abbott McNeill Whistler.

He is mostly remembered for his painting that everyone calls "Whistler's Mother" which in reality is entitled "Arrangement in Grey and Black..Protrait of the Painter's Mother".

He was a very prolific painter  as well as a decorative artist. As can be seen in the room panels he created.

The link to the Web Museum will give you a great opportunity to see a great many of his works but today I would like to feature my favorite work of his. Another one of my favorites from the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C.

          A SYMPHONY IN WHITE NO. 1, THE WHITE GIRL

 

I find the most wonderful thing about this painting is how well he has done the white . The brush strokes and the many colors that go into making up the color of the dress and drapery are magnificiant. To see the painting in person is mind blowing as it is large and quite over powering.

Be sure to go to the Web Museum site and see the rest of his work. It is just as wonderful as this.

WORLD AIDS DAY/DECEMBER 1ST 2006

Today, December 1st 2006 is World AIDS Day. Again...You know it really will be nice when this plague doesn't have it own day any more because it has been iradicated from this world and all others.

I remember one of my first blogs being about this same subject and saying how I had lost many friends to this terrible disease. Well thank the universe that my few friends that still have the disease are still with me. The drugs that they have finally come up with are still working, but for who knows how long and with what side effects. There still is no cure, no vaccine. It seems people have almost stopped caring, and why? I think because most of the AIDS victims are now in countries we don't care about. Africa for one. People are dying every where in Africa for many reasons.  Not enough drugs, too expensive drugs, people won't take the drugs. What happened to that money Bush promised to help fight the spread of AIDS. Obviously not there yet. Oh yeah then there is the issue about not helping clinics that give out condoms because the Bush Administration says just say NO to sex, Yeah right . These are adults not little kids and teenagers. Lets get with the program here. Do we care or not?

So I say to all of my friends and friends of friends out there, please when ever you can help support the fight against AIDS. There are many people out there who would appreciate your help.

I just realized that as of the 17th of November I have been blogging for a year. I had no idea. It sure doesn't seem like it has been that long. I was just thinking this morning that I had started in March and just now I thought I would check just for the hell of it and arn't I surprised. Guess i have been having such a good time that it just flew right by.

Glad I have met so many nice people out in blog land and because of  you all I think I will just keep on keepin' on.

Hey to all on this Monday morning.  I have been a little out of it lately and have not been participating in much because I am busy thinking about my sister, Robin and my brother-in- law , Jimmy, coming to town to help me celebrate my birthday on the 14th of  December. Don't you love the way I slip that in. Birthdays are always a big thing for me. Any excuse for a party.

This is a big one. Sort of scary. Never thought I would be this old. I am of the don't trust any one over 30, generation and I am now way over thirty. An origional baby boomer. My folks came home from WWII and got married and  10 m0nths later had me. They met in France, how romantic, Mom a WAC and Dad a green Leutinent(sp). 

OK enough beating around the proverbial bush, I will be sixty on th 14th and let me tell you it is a little weird. I am not your ususal 60 as I have no children, well you know me only furry ones. I have always been a wild a swinging chick, in the rock and roll business for a long time, a string of one husband and many live ins. Always out and about and doing things. Thankfully I do have many friends that fit into this catagory and are still alive. As in Sex and DRUGS and Rock and Roll. So it is going to be a strange aging process. I still don't act or look much different than I ever did. No more drugs though. Still boots and bell bottoms. I am so glad those came back into fashion. Always loved them.

A good friend out here in the wilds of Arizona is tuning 60 three days after me and his partner is throwing a hugh bash for him and I am included. Should be fun. Robin and Jimmy and I will be heading for Las Vegas for my official one on the 14th.( more slipping that in) Can't think of a better place to spend it. Who knows maybe I will run into some dashing figure. We will see Cirque de Soile's KA. I have seen "O" and Mystier(sp), and I just love their shows.  Nice dinner out the next night. Stay at the Flamingo, which I love, should be fun.

Ok I have finally gotten that off the old chest. I am still not sure how I feel about all this, but as my fellow old fart says "there isn't any thing we can do about it." Since I am well, healthy, in fairly decent shape, and hope to stay that way ( and those pictures of me are current) I guess it will be OK. On to a different transition.

Watch out for the furry kids during the winter holidays

PET POISON TIP: NO CATS & DOGS UNDER THE MISTLETOE, PLEASE!
While it may be nice to run into your sweetie under this traditional holiday plant, mistletoe can be potentially toxic to our animal companions.

Found throughout the United States, American mistletoe is actually a parasitic plant that lives off a variety of different tree species. If ingested in large enough quantities, mistletoe can potentially produce gastrointestinal irritation in pets, excessive thirst and urination, a drop in blood pressure and heart rate, seizures, coma and even death. According to our experts at the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (APCC), however, most animal ingestions involve small quantities—not more than the amount found in a sprig or two—and typically result in mild stomach upset that resolves with little or no treatment

To add my two cents worth, Pointsettas are poisonous to animals as well as people. Causes very bad burning sensation even if just bitten a little. One of  my kitties learned the had way and so did I. He was fine but his little mouth was not to happy.

So keep the furry ones away from mistletoe, pointsettas, cookie dough, and just too much people food, candy , cookies, alcoholic beverages  etc. during the upcoming festivities.

Art Sunday/The Gates

The Gates, an art installation erected in Central Park in New York City two years ago byChristo and Jeanne - Claude, artists.

I was so disappointed that I couldn't be in my home town to see this that I sent some friends out on a mission to get pictures of this wonderful event. My dear friend Jimmy not only took pictures but sent me two files full.

You will now be able to see a few of them. Interactive art is so wonderful. I was told The Gates turned the park into a place of magic.

The picture at the top is my friend Bob standing in The Gates in some pictures that he also took for me. Arn't friends great.

Tribute To Ed Bradley
